As a military spouse, usually the responsibility of sending care packages to a deployed spouse falls on your shoulders. Check out this ultimate list of what to pack in a care package.

Care Package, Military, Deployment

Sending a care package to your loved one should be fun! After including things from this list, lift their spirits more by customizing it to your military service member. Also, be sure to follow these tips for sending care packages.

  • Check on size and weight restrictions for packages. Pick up free Priority Mail boxes at your post office. Or call 1-800-610-8734 for a FREE military care package kit.
  • Include a card listing the contents of the care package. Enclose the recipient’s name and your name and everything that’s in the care package on the card. That way, the recipient knows that to expect when he/she sifts through and if the package breaks opens, mail handlers will know what to repack.
  • Place items that may spill or leak in heavy plastic zipper-lock bags. Get the gallon freezer bags, they’ll also help to keep things organized.
  • Write out the complete address. The address should include your service member’s full name , unit and APO/FPO (Air/Army Post Office or Fleet Post Office) address. Be sure you have the unit name, including the battalion, ship, squadron, platoon, etc., with the nine-digit ZIP code, if one is assigned. Also, be generic way you fill out the customs form (instead of all the foods, just put “non-perishable snacks”)
  • Number your packages and letters. Some care packages arrive later. Numbering them will alert your service member to care packages that are still on the way. Better yet, theme your care package, if possible (ie. 4th of July, Halloween, Christmas)
  • Don’t send perishables to warm climates during March to October. They will melt, spoil, or burst.
  • Be aware of what you can’t send. Obscene articles/photos, alcohol, weapons etc.
